Google is now planning to have its own branded mobile phone which will give you the power to surf the net wherever you are. According to The Observer there are talks taking place between Google and mobile phone operator Orange for making a Google branded phone. A meeting was held between Orange executives and Google officials at Google's headquarters in California. The companies are planning for a Google branded phone that might have a logo of Orange. The phone will be manufactured by a Taiwanese firm HTC and will have a built-in Google software. Among the many benefits of this phone will be location-based searches and since Google will be knowing the geographical position of your handset the users can get a custom list of local restaurants, cinemas and other amenities. You can also have maps and images from Google Earth. However Google phone might not be available before the year 2008.
According to Tony Cooper, a telecoms consultant at Deloitte, such a deal will be a win- win situation for both the companies as he says, “It has a potential to be a success, and to offer commercial success for both companies, particularly if Orange can link it to its broadband offering. If I was Orange, I'd want to get a share of the ad click-through revenues; if I was Google, I'd want a share of the airtime revenue. The potential stumbling block is if it's clunky and hard to use.”
