Google has announced a number of improvements in the AdSense reporting features. At the same time, the search engine giant has revealed the findings of a new research highlighting the benefits of ‘smart pricing. The research highlights the fact that publishers make more money with “smart pricing”. This happens even if their earning per-click is discounted as compared with search ads.

Improvements to AdSense reporting features

The first enhancement is the ability to ‘View all-time reports’. This means that publishers can view all earnings, impressions, and clicks that happened in their account. This is a feature revived from the earlier AdSense interface.

Another improvement is the ability to ‘Quickly access reports from the My ads tab’. By this feature, Google allows for easy access to the reporting information. As Google says “When viewing your ad units, custom channels, or URL channels on the My ads tab, just click ‘View report’ below a specific line item to view performance data for that particular ad unit or channel.”

The next improvement is the one which allows publishers to ‘Download CSVs in the correct local formatting’. This means that the exporting of reports can now be done on the basis of the publisher’s language preference. Publishers will now see the numbers in the manner they are shown in their language. As Google said, “As you may know, an amount written as $1,000.00 in the US or UK would be written as $1.000,00 in most of Europe and South America. Previously, only the $1,000.00 format was available for downloadable reports.”

New Research: “smart pricing” really is better for publishers

Google also brought to light a new research showing that “smart pricing” is better for advertisers as well as for publishers. Now Google “applies Smart Pricing (SP) to appropriately discount advertiser bids on the Google Display Network.”

It is known that a well-executed system like smart pricing enhances advertiser value. This leads to them being more likely to bid higher overall. This in turn will create more revenue for Google and the publisher. As the research announcement said, “The main implication of this analysis is good news for networks and publishers alike – under reasonable conditions Smart Pricing, and its non-Google analogs, can significantly grow the pie,”

What do you think of smart pricing? Do share your views.

The Ad Review Center for AdSense is now more ‘powerful’ as it has been overhauled by Google. Publishers now have more control over the ads showing up on their sites.

Google said that these changes were being brought in following the feedback of webmasters desiring better control. As Google said, "The new Ad review center will show you ads of all targeting types (contextual, interest-based, and placement) that have appeared on your pages, and allow you to review them. With placement-targeted ads, you can still review them before they show up on your site. And now, rather than grouping ads together, you can make decisions on individual ads to control what appears on your site at a granular level."

Now publishers can review and block the future display of ads appearing on their pages. Once you block some ads, Google will use the information about these ads and will highlight the ads that might offend for the publisher.

The changes made to the Ad Review center allow for better efficiency too. Webmasters will now get to see the ads that are getting the highest number of impressions on their pages first. In the case of reviewing placement-targeted ads, Google will show the ones likely to get the highest number of impressions on the pages. Since the ads not receiving or even likely to receiving any impressions on the site won’t appear in the tool, webmasters will focus on reviewing only the chosen ads that their visitors see. The ads will be magnified or full-size, this means details on the ad creative can now be seen in a better manner.

Webmasters using the previous version of the Ad Review tab can expect the new capabilities in a few days. For the first timers, Google says, “If you haven’t yet enabled this feature yet, visit the Allow & block ads tab to get started.” What do you think of these new ‘power’ changes, do share your views.

Google is shutting down the direct AdSense For Domains program. The closing down process is divided into stages with the final curtains will fall on April 18, 2012. Google has said that this move will not affect the entire program, only the "direct AdSense for Domains" program.

Google says, “After evaluating the benefits of our partner network, we’ve decided to retire the Hosted domains product within AdSense. Going forward, undeveloped domains will only be served through our existing AdSense for domains distribution network.”

As per Google, this is how the shutting down will begin with the first stage already put in action-

February 22: AdSense publishers can no longer start using the Hosted domains product.

March 21: You will no longer be able to create new hosted domains.

April 18: Hosted domains will become inactive and it will no longer be possible to earn from them.

June 27: Hosted domains will no longer be available in AdSense accounts.

Google has advised webmasters to migrate to another provider to continue monetizing their undeveloped domains. Google has received several complaints about the product and is finally shutting it down.

In another attempt to better quality ads, that drive more clicks and more money, Google has given a facelift to the Adsense link units. They will now look like Google search results. Google announced this by saying that this update was done to not only improve the look but also boost the performance.

Link units have been noted as an easy way of earning revenue from the smaller spaces on the site. This recent facelift has been applied to the landing pages as well. These are the changes that have been brought in-

Number Of Link Units- This change has been done based on the feedback from publishers and their own research that link units with four terms almost always perform better than five. So, now as opposed to five ads appearing on horizontal Ad Units, now every Link Unit will have a standard of 4 ads. Where as the the number of topics in all link units are being reduced to 3 for vertical orientations. More space has ensured better display as, Google says, “ If you’re currently using link units, this change will happen automatically. We’re also slightly increasing spacing between and font size of each term.”

The landing pages have a fresh look as well- They look a lot like Google search results page, as the color scheme, fonts, orientation and number of ads have been updated. There are more search suggestions on the left menu, just like in the case of regular search.

Google has decided to do away with its old AdSense version in November.

They have already been working for sometime now to enhance the new AdSense interface, focusing on developing features that expose AdSense publishers to additional insights, control, and efficiency.

Besides, there are some features available exclusively in the new interface, such as reporting by country and platform, multi-dimension reporting, and search functionality in the Ad review center.

Google also recently came up with top requested features that included viewing channels on the Home tab and creating scheduled reports. The search engine player says that it was in response to the feedback of AdSense publishers on features from the old AdSense interface version that they desired to see in the new version.

Now Google has requested AdSense publishers to start using the new interface to get themselves familiar with the same, along with its upgraded layouts and features. For using the new interface a publisher has just to click on the 'Try the new AdSense interface' link displayed in the upper corner of his account. Given the fact that getting themselves adjusted with the new interface will take some time, AdSense publishers using the new interface now will have the opportunity to keep switching between the two interfaces.

Google has also suggested publishers to watch its video tutorials to get an idea about how to complete common tasks in the new new AdSense interface. Alternatively, those publishers can consult the relevant Google help center.

Trying to dispel misgivings, if any, about the new interface, Google has also assured AdSense publishers that using the new interface will not have any impact on their ad targeting or earnings.

It may be mentioned here that Google had come up with the new AdSense interface in November 2010, and since then it has been working on its features on the basis of user feedback.

It is a cool news for Google AdSense publishers.

From October this year the Google AdSense display ads will be carrying a +1 button, thus enabling a visitor to endorse an ad and make it more likely to get displayed on his social connection, just by a click.

Google feels that this will make more readers to take notice of the ads on the site of a publisher. This will in in turn lead to more clicks, eventually resulting in higher returns.

For example, after coming across an ad on software application a visitor named 'X' might feel that his friends will benefit from the ad, and so he +1's the same. Later when his friends and other contacts sign in to their Google accounts, they find that it has been recommended by X. recommendation by a known person will certainly enthuse them to visit the ad themselves. So ultimately this way the ad is likely to get more clicks, finally resulting in more ad revenues for the publisher.

It may be noted here that there will be no revenue for +1 button click, as it itself will not be counted as a click on the ad.

+1 will appear on AdSense for content (including mobile content display ad formats, such as Flash ads, animated gif and images). In case a publisher does not wish ads published on his site to be carrying +1 button, then he has the option to opt out by signing into his AdSense account. In fact that option is already open to him. It is not that he has to wait till October.

It helps the publishers in three main ways:

Increased Insights - There is better and improved reporting for analyzing the data. This helps you to find out the performance of the ads.

Increased Control – New ad controls are far more simple, which enables you to control your ads and advertisers.

Increased Efficiency- Now you can quickly see your earnings & payment information, run reports and make changes.

So far Google has received positive reviews from its early users.

After the AdSense was originally launched in the year 2003, there have been only a few noticeable changes in the AdSense user interface and addition of new account overview page is one of them.

AdSense has recently announced the brand new user interface for publishers at Content Revenue Strategies. It will initially start as a closed beta, but if you have CRS, you can directly go to the optimization area to get yourself on the whitelist for closed beta.

There is an inbox in the user interface where you will find messages and tips from the AdSense team. This particular feature has been added after the request of publishers. As there is an increase in the phishing emails related to AdSense and AdWords, the feature will prove to be really useful.

Here are some other features of the Publisher Interface:

After you will login, you will see running totals on the right hand side of the page. It will not only include your total for that particular day but also the total revenue generated after the last payment.

There are many graphs on the page with metrics including: page impressions, clicks, page eCPM and page CTR.

The interface also has many help topics. Therefore, it you have any question related to specific metrics on the page, you can refer the help link for further information.

You can get more information about the new interface on Google AdSense blog.

Earlier, AdSense mobile publishers were only able to serve smaller text and images on the mobile content.

A JavaScript snippet, which is easier to implement and is optimized for mobile web has made it possible to implement the new feature. Publishers can now choose the additional ad unit sizes from common AdSense format that was earlier used on mobile sites.

If you are an AdSense publisher, you won't be require to load extra features to run the larger AdSense ad units on the cellphone. If a user is browsing content through his/her high-end phone, Google AdSense will automatically detect it and serve the larger AdSense units. The new feature is expected to increase AdSense revenue.

A recent post on the Inside AdSense Blog revealed that Google is all set to allow multiple Google-certified ad networks to compete with AdWords advertisers for display ad space on AdSense enabled sites. With this new change, ad networks or non-AdWords advertisers will also be able to bid on Google ad auction.

Well, this would be a nice way for AdSense publishers to generate revenue from their display ad space, no matter whether the ads come from AdWords advertisers or Google-certified ad networks. However, publishers will have control over which networks can show ads on their pages. They can also opt out of receiving ads from specific networks or all networks and have only AdWords advertisers to display ads on their sites. In addition, Google will not allow ad networks to collect any user data to be used for Internet-based advertising. This new feature will initially be available for AdSense publishers in North America and Europe. Below is a video that explains the change:

Here is the Google AdSense Team's mail to all AdSense publishers:

“We're writing to let you know about an upcoming update in your AdSense account designed to help you generate the maximum revenue from your ad units. You'll soon be able to allow multiple ad networks to show on your pages, which means that advertisers from external Google-certified networks will be able to compete with AdWords advertisers for your ad space. If you're unfamiliar with what ad networks are, they're companies that partner with advertisers and publishers to buy and sell ads on sites they don't own themselves, similar to AdSense. Ads from these networks will compete with Google ads to show on publisher sites, and the ad generating the highest revenue for publishers will be displayed. To ensure the quality of the ads appearing on your sites, we're certifying all participating ad networks for adherence to our standards for user privacy, ad quality, and speed. You'll also have control over which networks can show ads on your pages — you can choose to opt out of receiving ads from specific networks, or all networks completely. This means you can continue to show ads from only AdWords advertisers if you'd like. Finally, some ad networks use tools similar to Google's interest-based advertising to show more relevant ads to users on the sites they visit. These ad networks won't be permitted to collect data from your site for the purpose of subsequent interest-based advertising, but we’ll allow those who comply with user privacy guidelines to show ads using these tools. You'll have the ability to opt out of showing ads based on user interests from these ad networks, and we've changed our requirements for third-party ad serving to reflect this. More information is available at http://adwords.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=94230.

"This week, we’ll be rolling out a series of enhancements to AdSense's contextual targeting capabilities, which will more accurately match relevant ads to webpages,” said Woojin Kim, Google AdSense Product Manager.

Publishers will not require to update their AdSense accounts or ads, as these will be taken care of automatically. With the new enhancements, Google hopes to provide users with more relevant ads, help advertisers generate much more attractive returns by finding the right users and facilitate publishers to make more money.

Smartphones are revolutionizing our daily lives. With lower prices, unlimited data plans and faster network speeds, people are now reaching more for their cell phones than their computer for extracting information. This has made mobile applications more popular.

Google has contributed to the growth of mobile applications with the beta launch of AdSense for Mobile Applications. If you are an advertiser who is looking for ways to reach mobile users, then it is the perfect application for you. Google has already tried the service with its partners before offering the solution on a bigger platform.

In its official blog, Google said that developers can earn revenue by displaying text and image ads on iPhone and Android applications with the new AdSense for Mobile Applications. Google has also created a site where developers can get more details about the new applications programs, see answers to queries and sign up to participate in beta. You will also get to know about the benefits of advertising in mobile applications.

Google is looking forward to offer more features for mobile advertisers and publishers in the upcoming releases.

Check out the video of Howard Steinberg, Director, Business Development, Urbanspoon on his experience with AdSense for Mobile Applications.

Just after introducing the AdSense feature that allows changing font faces of ad units, Google has now announced another feature related to it. This time it is changing the size of the fonts of the text in AdSense ad units. You have an option to choose from three font sizes – small, medium and large.

The Inside AdSense blog is talking about important things that should be remembered while changing the font size. These include:

Ad titles will be scaled.

Font size can only be applied to the body of the ad.

There will be a different font size for each format size, browser, font face and OS settings on the user side.

The font size application will however vary as per the space available in the ad units.

Google has also announced that the default font size of all the AdSense units will soon be changed to “medium” size, which is currently set at “small” size. The company has taken such step as a response to the publisher feedbacks about the small size of the text, because larger font size leads to an improved ad performance.

If you want to change the font size of your ad settings, go to account's Ad Display Preference and choose the font size you want to have. This changed font size can be implemented across all the AdSense ad units or in a special ad unit only.

Google doesn't stop at one thing does it? Now, Google AdSense has come up with an interesting maneuver to attract its publishers. It has announced the implementation of image addition at the bottom of the link unit page. Link unit are substitute links showcasing textual advertisement topics relevant to the content on the site. When any of the topic is clicked a standard AdSense page full of ads is pulled out. As shown below

It is exciting new news for those using Adsense Link units, since Google believes that it will generate more revenue for publishers.

Google has also asked the new users to go ahead and try it. Since they do not even take up “ much space and can help add to your AdSense revenue”.
