According to Microsoft, it has reached a deal with HP (Hewlett Packard) under which the latter will be installing Live Search Toolbar on all HP Consumer PCs starting in 2009. The agreement also states that the preloaded browsers in the HP PCs will be set to default for Microsoft Live Search.

This new service will not be fully operational in the 'preview' version and will only be available in English. However, it will enable the users to:

According to the MSN Live Search Blog, the Live Search Books service from Microsoft is shutting down. However, Microsoft will preserve the Live Search Books and Live Search Academics databases and will appear in the regular Live web search results. This database will remain as it is without any further updates, because Microsoft is also letting go of its 'digitization initiatives' that include the library scanning and the in-copyright book programs.

Microsoft's press release reads “In light of developments since the withdrawal of the Microsoft proposal to acquire Yahoo! Inc., Microsoft announced that it is continuing to explore and pursue its alternatives to improve and expand its online services and advertising business. Microsoft is considering and has raised with Yahoo! an alternative that would involve a transaction with Yahoo! but not an acquisition of all of Yahoo! Microsoft is not proposing to make a new bid to acquire all of Yahoo! at this time, but reserves the right to reconsider that alternative depending on future developments and discussions that may take place with Yahoo! or discussions with shareholders of Yahoo! or Microsoft or with other third parties.” With this new offer, Microsoft Corp. seeks to continue its aim of expanding its online services.
