The British Telecommunications leader Virgin Media has announced that it will use Yahoo oneSearch for providing internet exploration facilities to its mobile service customers.
Virgin has plans to use the oneSearch at its new “enhanced mobile portal†from December 8.
In a release, Graeme Oxby, MD Virgin Mobile said, “The new Virgin Media mobile portal will bring the web to its consumer’s pockets. Users will have an access to all the information when Virgin will integrate Yahoo! oneSearch into the portalâ€.
Whoever said that it's better to jump out of a sinking ship when you can, probably had this scenario in mind. Sean Suchter, Yahoo!'s former Vice-President of Search Technology, is heading over to Microsoft. The news was confirmed by Satya Nadella, Senior Vice-President of Portal and Advertising, Microsoft. He made the following statement:
We had been anticipating an update in Yahoo! Search for the last few days. In fact, Yahoo! had itself caused these speculations by making the following announcement:
“Over the next few days, we'll be rolling out some changes to our crawling, indexing and ranking algorithms. While we expect the update will be completed soon, as you know, throughout this process you may see some ranking changes and page shuffling in the index.â€
Yahoo! and T-Mobile have announced a new partnership, under which, oneSearch, Yahoo!'s mobile search facility, will be available to all the customers of T-Mobile in the web2go services of their mobile phones.
This means that in addition to the services T-Mobile's web2go function was providing earlier, namely customizable home page, mobile shopping and downloading facility, T-Mobile users would also enjoy Yahoo's oneSearch feature.
One really can't say that the move was an absolutely unexpected, but still amid much hype Yahoo! CEO Jerry Yang officially announced his retirement from the position that he had assumed about 18 months ago.
The official press release begins as follows:
After Jerry Yang's explicit comments about Yahoo! being open to an acquisition from Microsoft, everyone was waiting with waited breath as to what the latter would have to say regarding this announcement. Well, the announcement came, it was anything but promising.
While speaking to a group of developers in Sydney, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer made these not-so-subtle statements in response to Yang's announcement. Ballmer openly dismissed the prospects of an outright acquisition. However, he emphasized that a search deal might be possibility.
Despite recent clarifications by Google, regarding the ad deal with Yahoo!, Google has finally decided to terminate its advertising partnership with Yahoo! without providing any clear answer!
Here’s a statement, just released by Yahoo….
SUNNYVALE, Calif., November 5, 2008 – Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO), a leading global Internet company, today announced that Google has terminated the advertising services agreement the companies announced in June. Yahoo! continues to believe in the benefits of the agreement and is disappointed that Google has elected to withdraw from the agreement rather than defend it in court. Google notified Yahoo! of its refusal to move forward with implementation of the agreement following indication from the Department of Justice that it would seek to block it, despite Yahoo!’s proposed revisions to address the DOJ’s concerns.
