According to a case study by SIM Partners, focusing on local SEO tactics on Google+ to boost local rankings & visibility is becoming a winning strategy. 

"How Your Competition is Beating You With Google+ Local Optimization", the case study reveals:

59 percent of the consumers are using Google every month for finding a reputable, local business

50 percent of mobile searches are conducted in the hope of finding local results, while 61 percent out of those searches convert into a purchase

While small businesses are getting savvier, top brands are deploying local SEO efforts to expand their SERP footprints of local.

SIM Partners joined hands with 315 U.S. businesses for employing tactics to improve local SERP visibility. It was observed that businesses aimed at improving the visibility for searches by focusing on 4,000 city/keyword combination.

When writing a description for any business location, always focus on the keywords that your target market will search for. Earlier Google had limited the number of characters a location could use on the page, but new interface allows unlimited number of characters.

Adding Additional Information

The number of photos business adds can influence its rankings in a positive or negative way. Provide Google an additional link to where all the important information about your business is stored. This could be done by identifying the citation source, which Google has not. Retrieve the URL from a photo and load the URL into Google Business listing.

Before optimization, the businesses surveyed ranked in the top seven positions for 26 percent of the keyword combinations. And only 8 percent of combinations ranked in top two positions.

By enhancing the business profiles, businesses increased the instances wherein they scored top seven local positions by 179 percent, top two positions y 399 percent and top five positions by 97 percent. Moreover, the combinations for which none of the businesses ranked in top seven positions lowered by 62 percent. 

So, as far as the study is concerned, enhancing business' Google+ Local profile will help in securing rank in top seven local positions.
