Every industry has some words and acronyms which form the basic vocabulary of the industry. However, when new individuals or observers enter the industry they often get confused or misunderstand these particular words and acronyms. SEM industry being no exception. There are some common terms which are  misunderstood or misused by the individuals. There is a great discussion going on a  WebMasterWorld Forums thread  regarding this subject. One of the common errors made by people is that they use ' ALT tags ' instead of 'ALT Attributes'. But in reality ALT is not a tag but an attribute. Ranking is not PageRank and there is no technical definition for Site and Page. But there are terms for different kinds of sites such as Authority Site, MFA Site, Directory Site, Thin Site and more. Indexing and spidering are not same process, also Java and Javascript are two distinct technologies.

There is more too. In fact, the discussion brings out so much which we always took for granted but could easily confuse a newcomer. Time for someone to take the trouble and compile a comprehensive glossary.
