This is big news for publishers out there. Google has announced the release of a new ‘news_keywords’ metatag for news publishers featuring in Google News.
What does the news_keywords metatag do?
This metatag is not the meta keywords tag which became redundant a few years ago. This metatag is different because it allows publishers to be fully creative while writing news headlines and new articles. They would not need to kill creative sentence phrasing just to satisfy the keywords requirements or Google, and can go metaphorical in every sense.
As Google says its basic aim to allow news people to be able to write news freely and all this while also aiding Google News to grasp the news content and classify it to put it forward in search results. Quoting Google, “Similar in spirit to the plain keywords metatag, the news_keywords metatag lets publishers specify a collection of terms that apply to a news article. These words don’t need to appear anywhere within the headline or body text.”
How to implement news_keywords metatag?
You can implement the news_keywords metatag like this:
meta name=”news_keywords” content=”World Cup, Brazil 2014, Spain vs Netherlands”
Like the meta keywords tag SEOs used, in this case too news publishers can only use 10 news keywords each separated by commas. You can find more about the usage in the Google help page.
Google adds that quality content remains a top requirement for the keywords to help a site rank better. Google adds, “high-quality reporting and interesting news content remain the strongest ways to put your newsroom’s work in front of Google News users.”
