Google's latest tweak with Google accounts is to invite the users to associate an extra email address to their existing account with Google, observes Tony Ruscoe. Google offers the benefit of providing this information as “Adding and email address helps Google associate useful information with your Google account. For example, Google calender can show invitations sent to any of your addresses.”

You would see the option once you've logged in to your account and clicked on the “Edit” link, right next to “Personal information.” Once you've entered the email, Google shoots an email to the address you've added as a verification measure.

However, neither can the alternative email address be a Gmail address, nor can you add the email to a second Google Account. If you enter a Gmail address you'd be greeted with “You can not associate a Gmail address with your Google Account.” If you try to add email to another Google account it would show an error.

It appears that Google has a couple of services in the pipeline, in addition to Google calender and invitations which would make use of this data.

Hi :)

in fact, this is already quite old news since it has been introduced a few months ago.
It also is possible to add other gmail accounts in the ‘mail fetcher’ settings, as displayed at http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=21288&topic=12897

cheers, HBE

This new features enable to associate non google email ids (read non-gmail ids) to the Google Account besides gmail. For example with adwords, adsense etc.
