As a “Fall Cleaning” drive, Google has announced that it is pulling the curtain down on a few more of its services. The latest made to retire services include: AdSense for Feeds, Places Directory, Google Storage and Classic Plus. Places Directory is an Android app for local search and Classic Plus allowed people to attach a background image on Google Homepage. As Google says, “Technology offers so many opportunities to help improve users' lives. This means it is really important to focus or we end up doing too much with too little impact. So today we're winding down a bunch more features-bringing the total to nearly 60 since we started our 'spring' clean last fall."

In case you want to use the Adsense for Feeds functionality, the same can be found with the Google powered Feedburner URLs. Other changes being made include:

  • Google storage in Picasa will be integrated with Google Drive
  • Spreadsheet Gadgets which people used to add specific features to Google Spreadsheets will go. The popular gadgets from these are now available in charts in spreadsheets.
  • Google News Badges will be shut down by October 15 along with Recommended Sections.
  • Google Insights have been merged with a new Google Trends. Search and compare trends from Google Trends only

Lastly Google also added, “We introduced +1 Reports in Webmaster Tools to help publishers measure +1 activity on their pages. Given that webmasters now use Social Reports in Google Analytics to get a wider view of social activity (including +1’s), we'll be discontinuing the stand-alone +1 Reports on November 14. Measuring social media remains a priority for Google Analytics, so stay tuned for future improvements.”

This year Google is on an ongoing spring cleaning drive under which 60 products have been made to retire.
