Google has long since been stressing on establishing your authorship status. The search industry always speculated its purpose and now we have an answer. Google has confirmed to Searchengineland that indeed there is a benefit of having authorship enabled: Bonus links. Yes, if Google sees a reader hit the back button after reading through an author’s post for a specific time, it will add another three links to the same author’s similar articles, to be displayed right below the original article the user clicked on in Search results.
Here is what Google said, “If a user visits an article by an author and it seems like they’d be interested in finding more articles by this author, when they click the “Back” button to return to the results page, we’ll show more results by that author.”
How it works is that you do a search for the author and then after reading the article you hit the back button. On the search results page, there will be another one of the recent articles by the same author on similar topic linked there. The key here is to click the back buttons after a certain amount of time (around 2 minutes) has elapsed. This time you take tells Google whether you liked the article or not. And once this time threshold is crossed, Google shows more articles by the same author and links to Google+ profile and all that.
More authors have worked on unraveling the importance Google pays to authorship and they have made some interesting observations. For instance, the extra links may not be from the same domain or that they may not be associated with the top search result which was clicked on.
