The online fraternity has fallen in love with the creative, attractive and easy on the eye infographics. It is like a picnic the way infographic designers and owners boost other webmasters to link to the infographic! However, this bubble of happiness may be pricked in the future as Google may discount these infographic links. The head of Google’s webspam team, Matt Cutts revealed this in an interview by stressing that Google may discount the value of links generated by infographics because more often than not, the information relayed by them is heavily incorrect.
Here is what Matt said, “This is similar to what people do with widgets as you and I have talked about in the past. I would not be surprised if at some point in the future we did not start to discount these infographic-type links to a degree. The link is often embedded in the infographic in a way that people don’t realize, vs. a true endorsement of your site.”
Matt agreed that infographic are user engaging and shareable content but it is the quality of information given in them which worries Google. In fact Matt called the information to be usually “simply wrong”. Here is the excerpt from the interview about Matt’s view on infographic’s information quality- “They get far off topic, or the fact checking is really poor. The infographic may be neat, but if the information it’s based on is simply wrong, then it’s misleading people.”
