According to the survey conducted by the 2015 Edelman Trust Barometer, Google (search engine) has taken over traditional media as the most trusted source of news on global level. Last year they were behind, but now they have stooped ahead of traditional media. This “trust gap” is most evident among Millennials, according to early release data seen by Quartz.

Edelman Trust Barometer has been conducting the survey for roughly 15 years, surveyed 27,000 adults in multiple countries. The survey covers wide range of topics and questions.

Hybrid media follows traditional media, which in turn is followed by social in the Edelman trust hierarchy. Hybrid media is broadly defined as media sites or blogs which are digital but may aggregate and curate traditional news sources. For e.g. Flipboard, TechMeme, Politico and Search Engine Land. The image below presents the data for the year 2014 where search was just behind traditional media in public trust.

The biggest search engine is of course Google. They do not provide news directly, but with links of various sites that users trust. The new dimension at which Google has reached can be because of two simple reasons. First, how convenient they have made everything, searching for every kind of news under one portal and the comprehensiveness of news-search results. Second, Google’s brand strength around the world is also likely to have influenced these new rankings.
