Post release of Android 5.0 Lollipop, Google has been focusing on redesigning its app with regard to the material design. Maps is the latest to get a redesign by the team and new version will be coming to iPhone & Android in the next few days.

Apart from the new look & feel, Google Maps has been designed to make life easier with new local search features.

Local Search

On searching for a location and tapping on the info sheet shown at the bottom of the screen, a new layer will pop up. It will display reviews, photos, and more options to explore from what you have just searched for.

If you want to see something else, tap on "More to Explore" at the bottom of the map to see if there's something similar to your original search.

Reservations and Uber

You can now make reservations from within the Maps app in a restaurant found on OpenTable. This feature will however work only in the US.

Maps will now recommend a method of travel based on the weather. It will tell if it is too cold to walk to your next destination or you should take Uber? It will also inform about the estimated Uber pick-up times & prices. However, you need to have the Uber app installed for this.

Material Design

If you love material design, you will love the new Maps app. It has colorful layout, which is all about creating shadows & surfaces that “echo the real world".

Google Maps app is not just competing with local search apps such as Foursquare, Yelp, and others, but also with TripAdvisor and myriad of other vertical start-ups.
