May 21 has been a big day for the search community. 2 major updates in a span of less than 24 hours- Panda 4.0 and Payday Loan 2.0. Although the Panda 4.0 update is a major one, it is much more softer and gentler and can directly impact small businesses perform better in the search results.

The fourth generation of Panda is the largest Panda update since August 12, 2011, which impacted 6-9% of queries and the largest Panda update for English queries since the launch of Panda. Panda 4.0 update is believed to impact 7.5% of English queries to a degree that is noticeable to a regular user.

Now, when Google has let the cat out of the bag, lets have a look at who got the worst blow and who managed to make the most of it. According to data released by SearchMetrics, eBay and ask.com were the biggest losers. eBay lost huge amount of traffic from the ebay.com/bhp/ area while ask.com lost massive traffic from the ask.com/question/ section.

The winners have gained relatively greater percentage of traffic than what the losers lost. Glassdoor emerged as the biggest winner, followed by eMedicineHealth and Medterms.

The losers here are mostly the aggregator sites that publish duplicate content. However, few of the aggregators are also among the winners. So as of now it’s difficult to conclude anything. These sites may have had changes in rankings for other reasons as well. For example, they were visible last week for different news stories. It might be possible that the Panda update is not fully rolled out now, and more ranking changes can be expected.

It should also be kept in mind that this is just a sample of search terms. To know if an update has benefited or hurt you, look at your search driven traffic from Google. If you can see a significant rise, this means Google has probably rewarded you. And if you see an enormous fall, then you were probably hit.
