Off lately Google has introduced a new service, Google Patents search engine through which people can search full-text of US patents dating back to 1790 till middle of 2006. More filings of 2006 year will be added to the service that will follow by weekly updates.

Although such a kind of search service is given by US Patent & Trademark Office but Google service has more advantages as a group product manager at Google, Bill Brougher said “ We've really applied the Google experience to it. It's easier so you don't have to apply the fielded searches. I think it will open up patent search to a lot of non-lawyers.” Also patents available for full-text searching by USPTO only dates back to 1976. The patents before that can only be searched through the limited meta data.

The Google service has over 7 million US patents. For those who prefer fielded searches, the service will provide them with an advanced search page which will consist of limited important fields. As of now there are no features like alerts through email or web feeds but might find their place in service in future.
