Google Places has greatly expanded the categories for enterprises outside the US by adding over a 1,000 new ones. This was announced by Jade Wang, a business community manager with Google.
The search engine giant had been working for some time to widen the available categories globally based on merchant feedback. They have now added these categories to the Places dashboard. The categories are translated to every language Google supports.
Previously, such a diverse number of categories were available only to the US businesses. For instance, if a businessperson planning a trip to France searches from the US, they will probably be using English, seeing the categories of French businesses in English. However, businesses in France are likely to set French while using Places. This means the system has to translate and associate the right category. This can soon become very complicated.
This is the first step of many that Google intends to take to improve Places for businesses internationally.Google Places International Adds Over 1,000 New Categories!,
