The craze of 1st April, the April Fool's day seems to have died over the years, but Google is determined to keep the craze alive. Here is a long list of Google pranks that we have come across so far…
The first out of the list was announced by Google Australia Blog, “ Now you can give your house a lick of fresh paint for free on Street View with Google SCHMICK (Simple Complete House Makeover Internet Conversion Kit). Forgot to mow the nature strip? Deck it out with some fresh buffalo grass. Front steps falling down? Swap them out for doric columns and a pergola. Graffiti on the front fence? Cover it with so many palm trees people will think they’re on the Vegas strip.”
Google Maps Treasure Hunt
The Google map treasure hunt mode although not a prank but completely amuses the senses. The treasure hunt map mode is actually part of a treasure hunt in which Google is asking users to help find a treasure buried by William “Captain” Kidd.
YouTube closing down on April 1st
In a blogpost YouTube has announced that it is closing down, “Nearly eight years later, with 72 hours of video being uploaded every minute, we finally have enough content to close the competition. We’ve started the process to select a winner and as of tomorrow at midnight, we will be closing the site to submissions.” Yes its a joke!
This is a brilliant one! What’s that smell? Google NoseBETA leverages new and existing technologies to offer the sharpest olfactory experience available: Street Sense vehicles have inhaled and indexed millions of atmospheric miles. Android Ambient Odor Detection collects smells via the world's most sensible mobile operating system. SMELLCD™ 1.8+ high-resolution compatible for precise and controlled odors. That's classic!
Google+ Photos +Emotion
Here is another piece of amusing announcement by Google+, “So starting today, we will give you the option to add stylized emotions to your photos. To give it a try, simply open one of your pictures in the lightbox, and click the “Add emotion” button at the top left of the screen.”
Gmail launched nine years ago on April 1st, 2004. In a blogpost Jonathan James, the project manager at Google explains the concept behind Google blue. “Starting today, you'll get to experience the next big step for Gmail, Gmail Blue.”
Introducing Google Fiber Poles
The Google Fiber crew in Kansas City is even in on the jokes. “How do you get a Gigabit everywhere in the community? We realized that the answer was all around us — utility poles.” Ofcourse utility poles. Poles already have our Fiber strung to them; all we had to do was come up with a way to make that Fiber accessible. That’s what we’ve done today. I’m happy to announce our newest project: Google Fiber Poles.
Google Apps: now helping you enjoy work
The Google Apps team also has a April Fool's day joke known as the Levity Algorithm. The joke here is that by clicking on a setting the boring work-associated calendar tasks turn into much more exciting and fun To Dos, and makes emails and presentations funnier.
Google Analytics now showing Space Station Traffic
The real time section of Google Analytics is now showing traffic from the International Space Station.
