Considered to be one of the most tight lipped search engines of all, it is always a daunting task to make Google reveal anything. However, lately Google has been a little flexible and has been advocating and practising transparency, to provide the world with some clarity about the way Google works.

Via the Official Google Blog, Google has announced that it has begun some changes in the Google Web Search that would enable the users to be more informed as to how the search results have been customized. This feature will be visible in a couple of days, in the form of a message located in the upper right corner of the search results page.

When you click on 'More Details' at the extreme right of the message, you will see a window, that would look something like this:

The Google customized results messages will be displayed whenever the search results are customized as per the following factors:

  1. Location: Google usually creates customized results on the basis of the IP address that gives an exact location of the user. Google is also able to use this information in other Google products as well, such as Google Maps etc.
  2. Search History: Based on the nature of the previous queries or searches, Google gathers a unique perspective on the intent of the search. Hence, it is then able to take into account this data and use it to provide customized results.
  3. Web History: In the event that a user is signed into Google and has the 'Web History' enabled, then Google gathers data such as, searches made previously on Google and also the browsing history of the user. This provides Google with critical information required to display customized results.

According to Google, “This new feature doesn't change anything at all about how you search on Google and the results you get; it just gives you more of a behind-the-scenes look at how we customize your search experience. We consider this to be an important step in our commitment to transparency, and we hope you find it informative and useful.”
