In March this year Google posted on the AdWords Policies Help section, it will be updating the policy on sexually explicit content by late June. It clarified, under this policy sexually explicit content will be prohibited and guidelines will be provided regarding promotion of other adult content. Now, CNBC reports, Google is prohibiting porn from appearing in its ad network.

According to the news service, Google sent email notifications to all AdWords partners who were found running such ads, informing them that going forward these ads and websites will be disapproved. The email communication read:

"Beginning in the coming weeks, we'll no longer accept ads that promote graphic depictions of sexual acts including, but not limited to, hardcore pornography; graphic sexual acts including sex acts such as masturbation; genital, anal, and oral sexual activity.

When we make this change, Google will disapprove all ads and sites that are identified as being in violation of our revised policy. Our system identified your account as potentially affected by this policy change. We ask that you make any necessary changes to your ads and sites to comply so that your campaigns can continue to run."

Porn is one of the most popular search terms in Google. According to The Independent, 351 million searches were made for the terms “sex”, “porn”, “free porn” and “porno” in May 2014. Early this year Google also issued new policies for the Google Play store, prohibiting apps that featured sexual content. However, Google still indexes pornographic websites. It is difficult to say whether the search engine giant is planning to completely block porn content from search results.
