Google has stripped the press releases of their link building value. Matt Cutts of Google said in a Google Webmaster Help forum that links embedded in PR’s should not have a positive impact on website rankings.

Here is what Matt exactly said responding to a question:

“Note: I wouldn't expect links from press release web sites to benefit your rankings, however.”

This would perhaps make SEO experts revisit their link building strategy. Press releases are a commonly used method of getting links for websites. A PR not only adds to the number of links on its own, but it is also syndicated by other news outlets, while keeping the links.

A press release may still carry the promotion value. It may make bloggers, reporters and others take notice of website, prompting them to write about it along with a link, adding the number of their backlinks. It may be taken as a natural link by Google, positively impacting the rankings. However, the PR will be devoid of link value on its own.
