Is Google trying to be the sole vendor of paid links? Not many have doubts anymore. However, Google is also trying to make a good PR activity out of it. There is Matt Cutts trying to convince how paid links are spam and reporting them is for everyones’ good.  In a recent interview Adam Lasnik said:

 "It's one of several tools you can use to avoid having PageRank passed. Other possible ways of accomplishing this are using JavaScript, and also redirecting through a page, a file or directory that is named in robots.txt as a page that should not be crawled. Nofollow works equally well; the key is that it tells us to not pass PageRank and related signals."

Opinion regarding this has interestingly been thoroughly  varying. A miffed user writes, "This concept is completely flawed. This self serving philosophy is also at the very core of the problem. When the machine attempts to modify the behavior of people to satisfy it’s own ends, the machine is broken. What people do should not be seen as affecting the search engine. What people do should be the very reason for the engine to exist in the first place. If the search engine is being affected by the actions of people, is any logical person going to honestly assume that it is the people that are broken? That is exactly what is happening here."
