It was just a couple of months ago, Matt Cutts said that it is unusual for any Google Toolbar PageRank update to come this year & he would be surprised to see that. But, the SEO community is all amazed to see Google updating its Toolbar PageRank values.

For SEO community, PageRank is the most clearly visible metric to determine the value of a website on the basis of the number of quality links it is pointing to it.

The last Toolbar PageRank update came in February and when the support for it was dropped on many browsers, SEO industry speculated that Google was phasing the update out. However, the recent update has clarified that PageRank very much exists for Google.

It is important to understand that PageRank is just one of the many factors Google's search algorithm takes into account; therefore, all your SEO efforts should not be pointed to just one thing. An update from Google however shows that PageRank still has value in measure the amount as well as quality of the links that are pointing to your site.
