Google’s Checklist on How to Build the Best Keyword List for Your Business!

Google AdWords has released a checklist for digital marketers to help them draw the maximum out of their keywords. This checklist is a part of the larger document “Keywords to the Wise”, which aims at increasing demand with some smart keyword strategies. AdWords posted a link to the same document via Twitter yesterday. Here’s the checklist for keyword and targeting:

  1. Your keywords should reflect the different types of queries that users type when they are searching for something you offer.
  2. Make sure that your keywords and their management are in alignment with the objectives of your business.
  3. Delete those keywords which no longer drive traffic to your website.
  4. Use broad match to capture long tail queries, reserve exact match for your primary volume and value drivers.
  5. Avoid creating slight variations of phrase/exact match keywords.
  6. Use Dynamic Search Ads to make your account management efficient.
  7. Improve the Ad Rank of your keywords to maximize their presence.
  8. Target search partners to reach users who aren’t on Google.com.
  9. Make negative keyword additions a regular part of account maintenance. Use the Keyword Planner or search terms reports to find the most powerful negatives.
  10. Focus negative keyword management at places where it will be most efficient, just like you do with your primary keywords.

According to Google, by understanding your keywords you can unbolt the potential in your account which was previously locked. Search advertising in Google AdWords is all about establishing a connection with user queries through carefully chosen keywords. In Google’s own words, “Your customers are constantly connected- be sure that your keywords account for all the different paths that their journeys take.”

    I guess some how this checklist reveals to AdWords users the best practices they should not ignore! At least, if one is able to master a lot of these keyword list then it becomes easier to make the most of Adwords.

    Indeed, we should keep to mind Google's position of “Your customers are constantly connected- be sure that your keywords account for all the different paths that their journeys take.”
