Google has given users a new functionality which allows them to ‘mute ads’ on the Google Display Network. Very soon people will be able to see a [x] mark on the right hand corner of display ads and they can click on it if they no longer want to see a certain display ad. The new icon is known as "mute this ad".

Google has been quoted, “Over the next few weeks, we’re introducing a small [x] which will appear in the corner of some display ads on the Google Display Network. When a user clicks the [x], he or she will no longer see ads from that campaign. We’re starting by showing the [x] in ads that are based on remarketing and interest categories.”

After a user clicks on the [x] sign, there will be an "Ad Muted" confirmation shown to them and they will not see ads from that campaign anymore.

However, these ads can be shown to people again by a different ad company.  The main idea behind this icon is to give users control over ads and ads experiences. The feature will first be seen with remarketing ads. As Google is quoted, “We believe this early-look feature can bring benefits to the entire ecosystem: users have a way to control their experience and signal that they aren’t interested in certain ads; advertisers are no longer paying to show ads to people who aren’t interested; and publishers will receive better performing (and potentially more valuable) ads, and spend less time filtering out ads they think won’t be of interest to their audience.”

Apart from users getting a better ad experience, Google stands to gain valuable feedback to improve the relevancy of ads before people. Google will not waste any further time on uninterested users and plans to use the feedback for future targeting purposes.
