Google released an updated video on AdWords auction and Ad Rank, once again starring Hal Varian, the Chief Economist at Google. Earlier this week, Google also issued a whitepaper on Quality Score and AdWords auction. Ad Rank is the scoring system used in each auction that decides in what order each ad will appear.

Hal Varian, who has been constantly appearing in these videos since 2009, is back again in the new video. This is the first video on the AdWords auction since Google changed the Ad Rank formula. This video includes “Format Impact”. Varian explains the factors that go into Ad Rank, how it is calculated and ways through which advertisers can raise their Ad Rank.

However, only the presentation is new, while the information is the same. The release of this video and the whitepaper within a short interval is not a coincidence. It falls under the Google initiative headed by Matt Lawson, Google’s Director of Performance Ads Marketing, to provide more resources and best practice overviews to advertisers than in the past.
