For all those webmasters who think that automated link exchange is one of the best ways to build traffic and get popularity, then probably the time has come where you all need to learn something from the latest post of the Live Search Webmaster Center Blog that is openly discouraging this exercise!

According to the blog post, automated link exchange can act as a very good way as far as generating inbound links to your sites is concerned. But the fact is that the practice can prove extremely harmful and can effect the rankings of your site in the long term prospectives!

Other problems are:

  • Lack of a valuable return on the investment.
  • Being built with software which mass-emails site owners with generic mails, asking for an exchange of links.
  • Requirement that webmasters to set up new link directories or require participation in directories that offer little or no value to the end users.

Among those link exchange mechanisms that can prove extremely negative for the site are auto-surf traffic exchange programs and paid search engine submission schemes.

Here are some of the alternatives, instead of going with those harmful link exchange mechanisms:

  • becoming a subject expert.
  • offering free service.
  • working with industry-specific associations that offer a professional touch.
  • leveraging social media.
  • And above all- A Quality Content!!! That is a must for every site.
