Move over James Cook. Google Maps for Mobile is the latest in navigation for the folks at UK. The launch of the service was announced at a press briefing at the capital.

Unlike the American version, this allows you to search tube/train station locations. Users can easily find business searches, local pin codes, driving directions in a cool satellite mode. For now, the application is for Java-enabled phones only.

Nathan Weinberg says "Most importantly, Google has dedicated thousands of man-hours translating the software from its native tongue into that language they speak in England." In contrast, one user says " In fact, one of the few localized features I could find in the UK version of the application was that it centered the map on London after installation. And I don’t live anywhere near there! Come on, Google. If you’re going to take months to release localized versions of your applications, at least localize them properly for us Brits! There’s no excuse for asking me to select a favorite rather than favourite."

Easy to use and free for download, the software is at its most accessible. The demo is available for trial.
