In a recent video, Head of Search Spam in Google, Matt Cutts is talking about how using rel=”author” structured data is beneficial for websites.

Cutts said that using particularly rel=”author” structured data will help the Google web spam team in improving search quality. While getting into the details, he explained that when a website moves from anonymous Web to Web with identity, it helps Google in understanding the authority and trust of the person who is writing the content. Moreover, it helps in differentiating a spammer from an author who has lot more authority and credibility.

Citing an example of Danny Sullivan, Matt Cutts said that if Danny writes something for a low PageRank forum, Google will consider the post to have more authority than the other domains/forums with low PageRank, where the same topic is being discussed.

The Conclusion:

Matt can see two groups of people online; the spammers and the real people. rel=author tag is here to provide an improved search experience. It gives the writer an identity and reputation.
