If you are a white hat blogger, writing original content, and linking to White hat stuff, the insights from Matt Cutts on choosing the place to pass link to original source of article are surely going to be of great help.

Matt Cutts was asked the following question, "I have a blog and I post original articles but I also like to link to the original website. So I link the website in a word in the first paragraph. Is this the right way or I should give a link separately at bottom".

Cutts said that it can work the either way. Whatever way you choose to do will work fine for Google's ranking because the link (whether at the bottom of the article or first paragraph) still flows page rank either way and credit will flow to the website that you are referring to.

However, Matt personally appreciates when there's a link somewhere near the top of the article. He also pointed out that there are blogs that give one little link at the bottom of the story, which doesn't seem like it is quite useful.

Another thing Cutts thinks is important is linking to the original source. Popular newspapers talk about an announcement but do not link to the original source of the news. Matt advices journalists or bloggers that they should let people look at the original source of information and form an opinion.

Summary – Although, Matt Cutts has shared some personal views in the blog, he just wants everybody to be considered on the web, share credit & attribute, so that people can get better information for their search.
