Webmaster Tools Team recently, announced the expansion of the support system. Now this system is not restricted to English-speaking world. By supporting Internationalizing Domain Names in Applications (IDNA) it is getting expanded to the non-English speaking world. IDNA provides a method for website owners to have domains that is not bounded by the limitations of English letters and numbers. Earlier, Internet host names were allowed to English alphabet that consists of 26 letters, the numbers 0-9, and the hyphen character.
With IDNA support, one can use other character sets, and organize them easily on the Webmaster Tools Dashboard. Earlier when one wanted to add http://北京大å¦.cn/ (Peking University) to their Webmaster Tools account before the launch of this IDNA support, they used to get an error message similar to this:
But, now with the launch of the IDNA support, it is possible to do so. IDNA converts the encoded http://北京大å¦.cn/ to a format called Punycode, which looks like http://xn--1lq90ic7fzpc.cn/. This format allows the site owners to diagnose and view information about their site. The format is bit confusing and, if there is more than one IDNA site, it is pretty hard to tell them apart.
But, Google has made it more easy to use. With Google's latest IDNA support, all you need to do is type in the name of your site, and it will be added.
