The word about the launch of WikiaSearch had already been around for some time. See Google Looking For Community Driven Search? and that it could pose a stiff competition to Google and Yahoo!.

Now Michael Arrington reports the launch of Private Beta of Wikia Search. The script of the letter reads "Ping me if you want one…. we’re launched. :-)" The public launch of the engine would take place on January 7th. The public launch would allow general public to use the system and give their feedback about their experience.

Jimmy Wales the founder of Wikipedia is the man behind the conception of WikiaSearch. He hopes to bring in the era of open source search engines and results which can be edited by humans. This new move also comes in the wake of all the success that Wikipedia has experienced. Through the Wikia Search they want to cash in on the human intelligence and achieve what the algorithms of the existing search engines can't.
