Social media has not eliminated search as a driver of user traffic on the Internet. The popular social media platform Twitter shared that Search Engine Optimization/SEO has led to a 10 times rise in the number of logged out visitors to the website.

This news was announced during the Twitter Analyst Day event held recently. Director of Product Management, Twitter, Trevor O’Brien indicated that the change had been made by the company earlier in the year to enable search engines such as Bing and Google to access 50,000 famous hashtag pages more effectively. These are pages where Twitter has combined tweets and data pertaining to a particular hashtag.

For instance, if users wished to see the #AlexFromTarget hashtag, that recently went viral, they might Google it. In case it is so, Twitter’s hashtag about this ranks within the top results. Those who click from here land directly on the page regarding a particular hashtag.

Twitter said that this change has led to the rise of numerous logged out users visiting the site by as much as tenfold, leading to an apparent rise in number from 7.5 million to 75 million users per month.

Logged out users indicated that the primary call to action on these pages is a move to motivate them to sign up for the social media group. But Twitter is currently checking out other options to make money from these pages as well. Twitter once had a deal with Google which sent huge traffic its way, though it later broke apart in the year 2011.
