Our key technical insight was that people type slowly, but read quickly, typically taking 300 milliseconds between keystrokes, but only 30 milliseconds (a tenth of the time!) to glance at another part of the page. This means that you can scan a results page while you type." said Google.

The Profound features of Google Instant:

Dynamic Search Results – It has the capability to displays lots of relevant search results, when the user types for a search query. The user does not has to click or even hit the enter button. This allows the user to interact with the results and to go through to the web content needed.

Automatic Predictions – The main feature of Google instant is that it can predict rest of the query before the user finishes typing a complete phrase, thus saving user's time. So if the required result is found just by entering the initial few terms, the user is not required to complete the search phrase.

Scroll to search – It allows the user to scroll through predictions displayed and see results instantly by going down with the arrow.

With Google Instant in mind, Google required a host of new technologies to built it. They needed new cashing systems, optimized page-rendering Javascript to assist Web browsers and adaptive control over the rate of results page display. The approach they had was to built something, that could scale while giving fast search results while sustaining the relevance and simplicity features that people like about Google. In all, 15 new technologies contribute to Google Instant functionality.
