Matt Cutts is likely to find this amusing. We posted a few weeks ago on Pagetraffic Buzz about one of his comments in the Google forums mentioning loss of link building value of press releases.
SEO Consult blog decided to take a test. They issued a press release with an anchor text ‘sreppleasers’ pointing to Matt’s blog. Google did index the press release and thereafter, Matt’s blog began to rank for the keyword ‘sreppleasers’ as well.
This makes us ponder about Matt’s comment. What exactly did he mean when he said – ‘I wouldn’t expect links from press release web sites to benefit your rankings, however.’
Perhaps he was short of being sharply clear. Or we read more than he meant into the statement. Hope Google clarifies on the issue.
