Thomas Claburn, in a post titled "Dear Microsoft: Enough With the Interactive TV" at Information Week, explains why Microsoft should shut down the interactive TV project even before its begun.
Reeking of rationalism that would put any philosopher to shame, he says this interactive TV:

The idea seems to be that this would somehow improve TV watching.

Well, it wouldn't. TV needs interactivity like paintings need flavoring. Sure, it might have some novelty value but ultimately it would ruin the experience. (Imagine all those people in the Louvre licking the Mona Lisa. It's not very appealing.)

Besides, TV already is plenty interactive. That's what the remote control is for.

Now, what made Thomas Claburn go berserk is Microsoft’s new patent application “In-program content telescoping.” Personally, I could not agree more with Thomas Claburn. All the change that I would like in my TV is less of soap operas. Anything more and I might go off like him.
