Twitter has launched Twitter alerts, a feature that will spread important news & information amongst users, at the time of emergency & when other communication lines are down. Twitter alerts will be used to spread public safety warnings and evacuation instructions.
The new service by Twitter will be really helpful during an emergency or natural calamity. Twitter introduced a service named Lifeline last year also to help Japanese users in finding emergency accounts at the time of crisis.
Users who will sign up for Twitter alerts will receive the notifications on their phone for all the tweets marked as alerts. Along with a push notification on iOS and Android, the tweets will be delivered via SMS also. The alerts appearing on the timeline will be different from regular Tweets, indicated with an orange bell.
Twitter alerts will be likely used by:
- Emergency Management Agencies
- Law Enforcement and Public Safety Agencies
- Local Governments & Private Organizations
Users can sign up for alerts by visiting an organization's alerts setup page. The alert page will have a URL such as: twitter.com/fema/alerts
For those who want to receive the Alerts via SMS, will have to enter or confirm their current phone number & activate Twitter text messaging.
