Twitter has put out their year-end 2012 Year in Review that reflects on the tweets and trends across five different categories:

- Top trends
- New voices
Golden Tweet of 2012 was ‘Four more years’ of President Obama.
This tweet on Nov 6 had 810,000 retweets and was marked a favorite by more than 300,000 Twitter users. The statistics made it the most popular tweet in the history of Twitter. Tweets by Justin Bieber ‘RIP Avalanna. i love you’ and TJ Lang ‘.. Fine me and use the money to pay the regular refs’ stood at second and third respectively.
Pulse of the Planet
The category throws light on the biggest conversations of the year around single events, based on the number of tweets or retweets. Summer Olympics in London was the top tweet with over 150 million tweets. Usain Bolt’s 200m sprint win spurred 80,000 tweets per minute making him the most-discussed athlete of 2012.
Other events on the category included:
- Election Day, more than 31 million tweets
- MTV Video Music Awards,14.7 million tweets
- Super Bowl, 13.7 million tweets
- Euro 2012, which generated 267,200 tweets per minute

The category includes tweets that gained instant appreciation by sheer weight of impact. Posts included tweets by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (@NASAJPL) as the Curiosity rover descended on Mars. Other posts in the category included superstorm from the space, images from underneath the water from London Olympics, images of Everest taken by Nobukazu Kuriki and many more.
The top conversation starter on Twitter this year was the #nowplaying. The top trending (http://2012.twitter.com/en-gb/trends.html) political tag was #tcot while sports tag was #nfl, and. Country that attracted most conversations in 2012 was #syria. Family Guy and Big Brother triggered the most conversation about TV shows. AT&T was the most conversed topic in technology.
New Voices puts up the new faces that joined Twitter in the year from the realms of politics, movies, TV, music, religion/culture, and more. Some entrants were TV star Steve Carell, Music legends Neil Young and Ringo Starr, Sports icon Pele, Do-gooder Chelsea Clinton and Pope Benedict XVI.
