Yahoo has officially announced that it is shutting down Yahoo Directory on December 31, 2014. However, if you have not been using Internet for a couple of decades you probably haven’t heard of the site.

Yahoo Directory is the product which led to Yahoo’s rise in the first place. Before Google, it was one of the most important search engines started in 1994 by David Filo and Jerry Yang. It was a human-edited directory of websites which were organized into various tiers.

In the early days of the web, Yahoo Directory was a big deal. If you had your website in the directory it was huge. At that time, accurate, fast and efficient search engines like Google and Bing were merely a dream. Searching for anything on the internet mainly depended on these websites.

With time high quality search engines left sites like Yahoo Directory behind. Nearly 20 years later Yahoo is finally killing the site which was once the center of its internet dynasty.

Yahoo has also announced to shut down two more products including Yahoo Education which will be closed on September 30 and Qwiki app on November 1.
