Yahoo made the new Yahoo! Local available in limited beta. This new version of the Yahoo! Local is featured with 'rich hyper-local content', that will provide people a truly personalized experience across desktop and mobile (currently available on iPhone and Android). This feature will allow people to discover and contribute to the best local news, deals, and events nearby, all in one place.
This was announced on Yahoo!'s blog saying, “Users today want to go beyond words presented on the screen. They want videos. They want social activity. They want it anywhere and anytime. People also want all of this to be local and personally relevant, while also being able to interact and participate in the creation of the content.” This beta, therefore, is an experiment by Yahoo! in their attempt to redefine how people experience and interact with content on the Web. Currently, this beta test is researching the experience in more than 30 neighborhoods and cities in the U.S., including San Francisco, Palo Alto, Brooklyn, New York and more. Below is a screenshot grab of San Francisco on new Yahoo! Local.
Through this product, Yahoo! strives to provide the people with a platform where they can easily find out what is going on in their neighborhoods from wherever they are, at home or away. Apart from local news and information, the new hyper-local also includes Top Picks, News, Things to Do, Deals and Yahoo's newly launched Local Offers program. This program will, says Yahoo!, help save money (individually) and promote local businesses by providing quick and easy access to local deals and offers.
Yahoo! also urges its users to contribute content to the Yahoo Contributor Network by adding an event or posts (news/reviews). The new look definitely looks cool and the features (with even more improvements) appear promising. Take the experience for a spin around the neighborhood to find out more and tell them what you think Stay tuned for more!
